Billy Hensley is a self-taught Chickasaw artist with an amazing eye for design and color. Working with the black silk of the jacket, he used brilliant gold and deep turquoise paint in a bold, banded arrangement, vertical on the front and horizontal on the back, that represents a banded rainbow against a dark, night sky. The dynamic, heavily textured paint contrasts beautifully with the smooth texture of the black silk, and gives a quiet energy to the overall look. There is both contemporary vigor and subdued elegance to this piece. Wear to that special occasion I used a technique with great texture to also set off the smooth fabric. with basic black top and pant accented with simple gold jewelry for a truly memorable fashion statement.
"I titled this coat Kala Losa, or Black Rainbow in Chickasaw. When working on it I focused the juxtaposition of the bright bold colors I am generally drawn to against the deep dark richness of the black silk. The stripes and lines represent a rainbow abstracted against the dark sky."
Black silk shell

Billy Hensley's Bio
“I am a mostly self-taught Chickasaw artist, living and working in Norman, Oklahoma. Starting at an early age I always had an interest in art. My childhood interest did not manifest itself until I reached High School where I was encouraged to pursue my talent and vision by my art teacher. I am predominantly a painter, but also create illustrations. I strive to stay original in my work and let it always evolve with fresh new techniques and applications.”
“I try to stay true to myself through my art. Painting is a way to express day to day subject matter. I believe a true artist needs not to explain their work but to leave the explanation up to the viewer. The viewer’s thoughts and feelings invoked by a work are all that really matter.”
